Photos - Surprises - Steps
Annandale
|
|
People must have been more agile when the houses were built in Susan Street,
Annandale, in the 1800s.
|
Arncliffe
|
|
Arncliffe’s favourite staircase is at 16 Segenhoe Street.
It was made when Alan was aged minus five, and originally had pride of place in an old Parramatta hotel.

Balmain

Balmain
East
The Zig Zag takes you from the bottom of Nicholson
Street, Balmain East, to Mort Bay. During the early 1900s workers
gathered along every “zig” and “zag” of
the pathway to get work with the Adelaide Steamship Company, hence
its name.
Bellevue Hill
|
|
And when you construct the steps in Cooper Park, Bellevue
Hill, I’ll have you sacked if they’re not
wide enough for people to pass each other.
|
Birchgrove
|
|
These are just a few of the 558 steps Alan covered in his 90-minute walk this day.
On this site, now Hopetoun Quays, was once the deepest coal mine ever sunk in Australia.
See its remains and the new buildings at the eastern end of Gow Street, Birchgrove. |
Bondi
Junction
|
|
How close would these steps in Hegarty
Lane, Bondi Junction, go for the title of world’s
most colourful steps? |
Cammeray
|
|

Motorists planning their route through Cammeray with
the aid of their street directory are in for a surprise
when they attempt to drive down Johnston Avenue. Cars
don't handle narrow steps very well, and that's all
there is of Johnston Avenue, Cammeray. (Yes, it is Johnston
- the signwriter must have run out of "Ts".)

Cammeray
It's a habit in Cammeray. You can also try driving or even
overtaking in East Avenue and Tiley Street.
